Advantage of Fiberglas Shingles Over Organic Shingles

Asphalt shingles come in two basic types:

A) Organic Shingles B) Fibre Shingles

A) Organic Shingles

  • Organic shingles consist of an organic felt material which is generally paper saturated with asphalt to make it waterproof
  • A top coating of adhesive asphalt is then applied and the ceramic granules are then embedded
  • Organic shingles contain around 40% more asphalt than their glass fiber counterpart This extra needed asphalt makes them less environmentally friendly
  • The paper-based nature of organic shingles leaves them more prone to fire damage, and their highest FM rating for fire is class “B”.

B) Fiberglass Shingles

  • Fiber Glass shingles has a fiber glass reinforcing mat manufactured to the shape of the shingle. This mat is then coated with asphalt which contains mineral fillers. The purpose is for reinforcement
  • Fiberglass shingles typically obtain a class “A” fire rating as the fiberglass mat resists fire better than organic/paper mats
  • The advantages with a fiberglass mat core are improved fire resistance, lighter weight (the fiberglass is naturally much thinner than a paper based felt) and a longer expected roof life.

Laminated Fiberglass Shingles is slowly replacing Organic Shingles in Canada and has replaced mostly all in the United States and is now the most preferred shingle option.

WinRoyal Roofing  offers IKO’s Laminated Fiberglass Shingles in various color options.

IKO Laminated Fiberglass Asphalt Shingles

The IKO Asphalt Shingle Roof consists of mainly asphalt saturants, coatings and fibreglass base materials. These components are then combined during the production process. Asphalt is a unique material which occurs both naturally and as a by-product of crude oil refining.

Base layer is of glass fiber which is reinforcing mat for Asphalt. The glass fiber mat is made from wet, random-laid fiberglass bonded with urea formaldehyde  resin.

The mat is then coated with asphalt which contains mineral fillers and makes the fiberglass shingle waterproof.

Two distinct layers are  then laminated  together with asphalt sealant and thereby combing the strength of two shingles for better quality.

Fiberglass shingles typically obtain a class “A” fire rating as the fiberglass mat resists fire better than organic/paper mats.

  • A base material is made of fibreglass mat
Serves as the matrix which supports the other components and gives the product the strength to withstand manufacturing, handling, installation and service conditions.
  • A specially-formulated asphalt coating
Provides the long-term ability to resist weathering and remain stable under severe service temperature extremes
  • A surfacing of weather resistant mineral granules
Shields the asphalt coating against the UV rays, adds colour to the product and provides fire resistance

IKO Scotchgard Algae Resistant Roofing System. **

IKO Premier Laminated Fiberglass Shingles are also available with the scotchgard Algae resistanr, which warrants that your roof will remain algae resistant for 20 years.

In algae-resistant shingles, a portion of the granules contain leachable copper ceramically coated, designed to protect against discoloration from algae on the roof. This does not protect from moss  growth but does slow the growth.

** Available only for projects.

Shingles Coloration

IKO  Shingles are available in a wide variety of colors to match almost any facade or landscape. Various color options are available as below.

The most preferred and popular colors and are normally in stock with WinRoyal Roofing are

Pewter Grey
Buckskin Tan

Following colors are available for project quantities.

Antique Black Blue Sea Prarie Wood
Sherwood Green Weathered Wood Mocha
Driftwood Weathered White

Ceramic Granules are embedded on surface during manufacturing process to provide various colors options.

The ceraminc granules are there for two reasons.

  • The primary reason is to protect the shingles from the sun. The sun’s UV rays are very damaging to asphalt and cause it to deteriorate prematurely
  • The second and more obvious reason for the granules is aesthetics

Shingle Underlayment   - Eaveguard (waterproof membrane)

  • Eaveguard  is self-adhering asphalt waterproofing shingle underlayment specifically designed to provide secondary waterproofing protection to shingles
  • Composed of high-tack rubberized asphalt and glass fiber mat with sand on the upper surface to provide a slip-resistant working surface
  • The lower surface has a split-release silicone release backing for ease of application.

Reliable Waterproofing:
Self adhering  membrane and it main function is to serve as a waterproofing layer, in both residential and commercial building, protecting the building’s interior from damages caused by water infiltration.

Seal around Roofing Fasteners:

Helps deliver premium roof leak protection via an aggressive rubberized asphalt formulation that seals around roof covering fasteners.

The product delivers premium performance with minimal additional weight.

Best Adhesion to the Roof Deck:
The time-tested, rubberized asphalt formulation provides superior initial and long-term adhesion without primer or nails. This strong bond helps insure watertight installation.

INSTALATION  PROCESS  - Diagonal Offset Pattern

Starter Course – IKO’s Universal Starter

6” off the length of first starter is cut and is applied at the lower left hand corner of the roof. Then full length starters are installed al along the periphery of the roof.

Fiberglass Laminated Shingle Application
Following procedure is followed to establish the “Diagonal Offset Pattern”

  • First Course :
Full width shingle applied flush with the starter course at the lower hand corner of the roof
  • Second Course :
5 -5/8” will be cut from the left end of the shingle and apply the 34 3/8”  long piece over  the headlap of the 1st course shingle
  • Third Course:
11 ¼” will be cut from left end of the shingle and apply the 28 3/4”  long piece over  the headlap of the 2nd  course shingle
  • Succeeding Course:
Course Four Thru Seven are begun with the partial shingle, each  5 5/8” shorter and thereby establishing the over all diagonal  pattern

Nailing Process

  • IKO Recommends the use of nails
  • Four Nails per Shingles are put in the nailing zone as per the picture below

  • Imported Galvanised nails (as per the picture) with minimum 1” length is used for installation

  • Nails are driven thru with imported pneumatic nailing gun machines

  • Installation is done by trained technician
